City of Holtville honors fallen soldiers on Memorial Day

The American Legion along with the city of Holtville honored those who served in the armed forces and lost their lives during their service. Residents paid their respects to family and friends of fallen soldiers as well as remembering what Memorial Day is all about.

“Oh, it’s extremely important. This is history. These guys fought for our freedom and it’s extremely important that we keep their memory alive,” said Kim Vincent, President of American Legion Holtville Chapter

Raymond Castillo, Chairman of Imperial County Board of Supervisors said today is a reminder of the cost of our freedom. “Events like this you know just reminds us of them and their service that they’re doing for us. For our country to maintain our freedoms.”

For families who’ve lost a loved one while serving, Memorial Day keeps their memory alive. Carlos Zaragoza, a veteran said, “the fact that people are remembering my brother, means that he continues to live on. Is, he lives in our hearts. He lives in our memories.”

Holtville remembers the 33 lives that belonged to the community and never returned home. The memorial in the park is a daily reminder of how precious life is and to never take our country for granted.
