Topic of the Day: It takes a Village
13 On Your Side wants to know your thoughts:
For thousands of kids being taken from their homes can be traumatic and confusing; many times the children being removed come as a result of allegations of abuse and or neglect. These children are then taken to homes where specially trained host families care for them while their case make its way through the system and they’re either returned to their homes or placed in another home.
On any given day, there are close to a half million children in foster care across the country. In Yuma County alone 400 children are presently in the foster care system out of that, 130 are teens considered the hardest to place. Foster parents are trained and licensed to provide children with the care they need while in foster care. Along with their host parents the children have teams of advocates that watch out for the child’s best interests.
Sadly, Yuma County is like many other counties through out the country; the cases are there, but eligible homes aren’t. Many fear the responsibility or are unaware of the steps needed to be certified. Regardless of the issues communities around the world struggle to find homes for their children in need.
