Students go #REDFORED for the third day

For the third time, teacher walkouts continue across Arizona with still no deal, but it’s not only teachers who are standing up for more funding.

‘I’m out here because my mom is a teacher at Kofa High School and my grandma is a teacher as well,’ said Issac Navarette. A middle school student who is waving his #REDFORED sign for support.

Even if it’s outside the classroom, students are learning and engaged in the Red For ED movement.

‘It makes me feel happy cause they’re all standing up, for what they want,’ said sixth-grader Tallulah.

For Patrick in third grade, he’s hoping to be a gym teacher in the future and feels bad for his mother who teaches music. ‘The first time I was kind of shocked and the second time I was kind of bored, and the third time, I’m like ‘ok’ I’m participating, I’m doing this.’ As communities across the state wait for lawmakers to make a decision, teachers believe it’s the kids who are suffering the most. Jaime McGalliard who is an Instructional Leader for Gila Ridge High School describes the next step as ‘uneasy’. ‘I think that’s the biggest deal right now… that ‘unknown’ feeling, and that ‘unknown’ scares a lot of people. Whether it’s our students, parents, or us teachers, but again, we’re continuing to educate ourselves with this process and decide what is best for our students and that’s all that matters right here.’
