Topic of the Day: Deserter gets no jail time

They’re the epitome of heroism, the men and women who stand in harms way to protect our way of life. So, when one of our guardians walks away from their post, it’s more than just desertion it’s a betrayal to the American way of life. In 2009, Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl did just that; Sergeant Bergdahl was later captured by the Taliban.
In an effort to free the imprisoned soldier the U.S. sent in a team to rescue Bergdahl and in doing so traded him for five Taliban soldiers. Since then, a cloud has hovered over the shunned soldier and many felt that the ultimate betrayal should face the ultimate punishment. But, Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl will not be facing prison time and instead will be stripped of his rank and is set to receive a dishonorable discharge.
The news came Friday morning, as a military judge announced his decision; along with being discharged Bergdahl will have to pay a $10,000 fine. It’s unclear if recent comments by the Commander in Chief or if the information received from his five year’s behind enemy lines played any part in his sentencing.
