I-8 on-ramp at Algodones Road reopens

Caltrans officials said the westbound Interstate 8 on-ramp at Algodones Road/State Route 186 (SR-186) reopened Friday.

Construction continues for the I-8 Update Project in Imperial County and both lanes on westbound I-8 from the California-Arizona state line west of Algodones Road have reopened as well.

Caltrans crews are expected to open the eastbound lanes on this section of I-8 within two weeks.

The eastbound I-8 on-ramp at 4th Avenue in Winterhaven will remain closed as crews continue work to install new sidewalks and pedestrian crossings that meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards. Detour signs are in place to direct drivers to use Winterhaven Drive (Exit 170).

Lane reductions to one lane in each direction on I-8 continue for seven miles from just west of the Algodones Road separation to west of Ogilby Road overcrossing.

A five-mile section of I-8 from about one-half mile west of State Route 111 to one-half mile east of Barbara Worth Drive has also been reduced to one lane in each direction for Segment 4 work.

Traffic will be impacted during construction with possible delays.

The I-8 Update is a major pavement rehabilitation project that will construct Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) over 48 miles on Interstate 8 in Imperial County. The work will result in a long-lasting superior roadway, capable of withstanding the heaviest traffic loads.

Construction began 2016 and is expected to be completed by 2019.
