Public school supporters call on voters to “Save Our Schools”

Concerned citizens gathered Thursday in support of Arizona schools. ‘Save our Schools’ or ‘SOS Arizona’ is calling on Arizonans to prioritize public education by putting the repeal of a recently passed bill on the 2018 ballot.

SB 1431 is a bill passed by Governor Doug Ducey. The goal of the original program was to benefit families with special needs students. Now the bill calls for the expansion of that voucher program that would eventually allow all public and charter school students to use taxpayer money to attend the private school of their choice. It goes through an empowerment Scholarship Account which allows eligible students to take 90 percent of their district’s per pupil funding.

Now public school supporters are calling for Arizonans to take a stance–hoping that voters will sign their names and get the repeal of SB 1431 on the 2018 ballot.

The deadline to sign the petition to get the repeal of SB 1431 on next year’s ballot is July 31. ‘Save our Schools’ will have another chance to sign or turn in notarized petitions Saturday, July 22 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Brewers restaurant in Yuma.
