New Study shows less monsoon storms now

According to the latest report from the University of Arizona there appear to be less monsoonal storms today compared to 60-years ago. The study compared the numbers from recent storm activity to that of the 1950’s. U of A scientist however point out that although there are fewer storms today, the storms we do have are stronger and more dangerous than in decades past.

“The monsoon is the main severe weather threat in Arizona. Dust storms, wind, flash flooding, microbursts — those are the things that are immediate dangers to life and property,” said co-author Christopher Castro, a UA associate professor of hydrology and atmospheric sciences.

According to the study Yuma is among the top Arizona cities to be affected by these extreme storms. Moreso is the Yuma Proving Ground which has received severe storms in the past. Dr. Castro adds that Having less frequent but more intense storms is consistent with what is expected throughout the world due to climate change.
