Suspect taken to hospital after lighting kitchen on fire
The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office said a suspect was taken to the hospital after he allegedly physically assaulted and attempted to stab a man, before setting a kitchen on fire.
YCSO said Wednesday at approximately 6:47 a.m., the deputies responded to the 2700 block of West Clifford Way in regards to an aggravated assault per domestic violence case.
Upon arrival, deputies spoke to the victim, who stated that the suspect had physically assaulted and attempted to stab him. The victim also stated that the suspect had barricaded himself inside the home.
A YCSO Crisis Management Unit Negotiator on scene began negotiating with the barricaded suspect. During negotiations, the suspect threatened to start a fire and burn the residence from within. After multiple attempts for a peaceful resolution, the suspect lit a fire in the kitchen and smoke began to billow from an open window.
Deputies took immediate action and forced entry through the front door to physically remove the suspect from the burning residence after failing to comply with commands. Deputies extinguished the flames with a fire extinguisher. The suspect was later transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center for further evaluation.
The Sheriff’s Office would like to commend the Deputies involved in Thursday’s rescue for their heroic actions that not only saved a life, but also highlights the dedication of our men and woman in law enforcement who are committed to keeping our communities safe.
