Person injured after swinging from railroad bridge

The Yuma Fire Department said on Saturday just after 8:00 pm, an injured person was reported at the Colorado River near the Ocean to Ocean bridge. Yuma Fire Department personnel responded to the area and found a person suffering from an injury to their leg. The person was treated at the scene and transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment.

It was determined the person was swinging from a rope attached to the railroad bridge over the Colorado River. The person let go of the rope and landed in shallow water. This is at least the third response in a month for someone injured by doing this same thing. After each response, YFD personnel have cut down the rope from the bridge.

It should be obvious that this is very dangerous behavior. The water is shallow and constantly changing. This behavior is causing very avoidable injuries, tying up emergency medical resources, and it is only a matter of time before a fatality results.

The Yuma area has some great water recreation opportunities, use them sensibly. If you witness someone attaching ropes, jumping from bridges, etc. please report it to the police. You might be saving a life, or preventing a life changing injury.
