Woman dies in hospital after head-on crash

Deputies are investigating a fatal head-on crash.

Yuma County Sheriff’s Office deputies say Belinda Elwood, 55, was unresponsive when emergency responders arrived. She was trapped inside the car and had to be extracted with the ‘jaws of life’.

She was taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.

The crash happened off of South Somerton Avenue at around 3:59 p.m.

Deputies say, Elwood was heading south, when Manuel Motter, 19, who was driving a pick-up truck in the opposite direction crashed into her.

One of the tires on the truck blew out causing Motter to lose control and crash into Elwood.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
