It’s one of country’s most costly mistakes costing the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans. And as the south fell at the end of the Civil War many refused to abide by the new regime and retreated west. Many slave owners made Texas their home and for nearly two years continued to use slave labor.
That was until June 19, 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger and his men arrived in Galveston to forcibly enact the Emancipation Proclamation freeing the last of the country’s slaves. For more than a hundred and fifty years Americans have celebrated that day proclaiming it “Juneteenth”. Throughout the country people celebrate the countries evolution into what is now a great nation.
