Woman dies in fatal crash

The California Highway Patrol said one person is dead following a fatal vehicle rollover in Winterhaven. CHP siad the incident happened Sunday at 12:30 a.m. They said the driver of a silver Toyota Camry was on SR-78 heading east of Walter’s Camp at about 65 miles per hour.

That’s when the driver saw an animal in the roadway and turned to the right to avoid the animal. CHP said by doing so the driver traveled off the roadway into the desert terrain and overturned.

Officer Jeff Knutson says, ” Speed is sometimes a factor in a collision like this. If it’s a small animal, sometimes the best case is to hit the animal and then pull over to see the damage, if it’s a large animal, then just do what you can to take invasive action.”

The driver was ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries.

The passenger suffered major injuries, including a broken left arm and left side rib pain. He was transported to a hospital in Palm Springs area. Both the driver and passenger are from Blythe, Calif.
