Topic of the Day: Riot Bill Passes in Arizona Senate
13 On Your Side wants to know your thoughts:
Senate Bill 1142 is making it’s way to the Arizona House of Representatives after being approved in the Senate by a 17-13 vote. If passed the new law would give law enforcement the authority to arrest people organizing rallies or protests in an effort to stop a possible riot.
The new law places riots in the same class as racketeering which means organizers can not only be arrested, but be treated as a criminal organization who’s assets can be seized. No word if this new measure blossomed after GOP leaders boasted claims that protesters were being paid to protest and riot.
Those opposing the law believe this act is an attempt to chill the 1st Amendment and warn that it will hurt both protesters and supporters.
