Lawsuit against Proposition 206 makes its way to Arizona Supreme Court; local organizations react

A lawsuit against Proposition 206 is making its way to the Arizona Supreme Court. The Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry filed the lawsuit and the Arizona Supreme Court formally accepted the case Thursday.

The hearing is said to determine whether or not Proposition 206 violates the state constitution by mandating higher wages for organizations working under state contracts without identifying a funding source. This impacts organizations such as the Saguaro Foundation in Yuma, who says if the case is advanced they would be exempt from raising their minimum wage. The Sagauro Foundation says that although it would allow them temporary relief, it would hurt their organization in the long run.

The Arizona Supreme Court will hold the hearing on March 9. Relief would be limited to state-contracted organizations unless the Supreme Court decides that the entire Proposition is unconstitutional.
