Phone scammers target San Luis
There is an increasing number of phone scans being reported in San Luis.
The San Luis Police Department says it’s a trend that has them on high alert. They received nine reports on Wednesday alone about the fraudulent calls.
Police say the callers are reported to have thick “Hispanic” accents. They say one of the phone calls came into the Police Dispatch center.
“One of them was made into our dispatch center asking for help where someone was reporting being kidnapped and needing money to pay off a debt,” said Miguel Alvarez, of the San Luis Police Department.
According to police, no one has fallen for the scams so far. They say the situation can be heightened when the callers ask for ransom money after pretending to kidnap relatives. Police say residents may easily fall into the trap in the fright of the moment.
“We ask residents to be very, very careful. If they think someone is at risk, they can notify local law enforcement,” said Alvarez.
The Federal Trade Commission has also set up a website with ideas and suggestions on how to spot a phone scammer. Consumers can also submit a complaint. For more information, you can click here.
Residents can also sign up for the “National Do Not Call” registry which prohibits telemarketers from calling your phone after it has been on the registry for 31 days. Registering for the website is free. You can find out more here.
