Mexican President AMLO Has Thousands March on MX Capitol
The guns are out, and we're off the to the races!
In addition to the 2024 presidential election happening in the US, Mexico is hosting one too.
For decades, Mexicans have lived largely under one party rule, PRI, with PAN, a center right party, occasionally seizing power.
AMLO had grand promises when he campaigned for president in 2018 under the new "Morena" party banner.
But it seems, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Violence and governmental corruption have increased during AMLO's tenure, and many Mexicans have grown incensced over AMLO's "hugs not bullets" strategy.
Two weeks ago, tens of thousands of people marched to protest the president's reign, as well as his efforts to control who oversees the next election. AMLO then called on his supporters, numbering in the thousands, to support his agenda.
AMLO is right to be worried. A potential candidate is Luis Colosio Jr., son of the famed Luis Colosio who got assassinated in 1994 and was a figurehead for anti-corruption reform. He is the mayor of Monterrey and has governed on an anti-corruption agenda. Many others wait within the PRI and PAN party, and while AMLO won't be able to run again, it seems he already has picked his successor within the Morena party.
