Planned Parenthood to appeal abortion ruling
Maricopa County Attorney says she won't prosecute women who get an abortion - FOX 9's Adam Klepp reports
YUMA, Ariz. (KECY, KYMA) - A ruling by a Pima County judge re-instated a law banning abortions put on the books when Arizona was not even a state.
Since the ruling Planned Parenthood again has paused all abortion procedures in the state but are continuing the legal fight.
Asking the judge in the case for a stay on her decision which would pause the total ban.
As this case could go all the way to the State Supreme Court.
Arizona Planned Parenthood argued for the 15-week ban to take precedence.
Saying women’s health has been negatively impacted since the June reversal of Roe v Wade.
And that the competing laws are making it more difficult on health care providers.
“We have had to turn patients away from essential healthcare they deserve because there has been a lack of legal clarity around what abortion laws are in Arizona,” Brittany Fonteno said.
Amid the confusion, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell is making one thing clear.
“I will not prosecute women for having abortions,” Mitchell said.
Arizona now is the twelfth state to ban abortions with no exceptions for rape or incest.
