Five homes evacuated following gas leak in Foothills area

Five homes were evacuated following a gas leak in the area of Brandon and Hunter Drive in the Foothills Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office, the gas leak was reported around 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Rural Metro Fire Department said heavy construction was happening in the area when one worker accidentally hit the line causing the leak. A contractor, who was in the area, stopped the leak within several minutes and helped prevent the situation from becoming worse.

The contractor had previously taken training from Southwest Gas on how to stop a leak, fire officials added.

Residents that were evacuated have now returned into their homes. Rural Metro Fire Department and Southwest Gas were both at the scene during the gas leak.
