All you need to know: Upcoming elections in Yuma

YUMA, Ariz. ( KYMA, KECY) - Residents in Yuma County still have the chance to cast their ballots before primary elections results come out on August 4th.

News 11's Carmen Valencia spoke with Yuma County Recorder, Robyn Pouquette, on the current status of numbers.

Robyn said there are 96-thousand registered voters county-wide, as of last Friday 51-thousand ballots were sent out, the count has only received 10 percent of those back meaning only five-thousand ballots were returned from voters.

“We have found that the number is a little low for a federal election, but primary elections usually have a lower voter turnout than the general election," said Robyn.

Robyn said the primaries usually have a lower turnout rate but do want to encourage more residents to vote. She stresses the importance of this election leading up to the general elections in November.

Residents have until July 24th to request an early ballot and if you're mailing your ballot make sure to do so before July 29th. If you miss that deadline you can drop it off at the recorder's office or at any voting centers.

• Cesar Chavez Cultural Center
• San Luis Library

The Recorder's office does encourage people to do everything from home if fear from contracting the virus becomes an issue. Robyn stresses major changes have happened at the voting centers to ensure everyone's safety.

“There is significant distance between one voting machine to the other, and the contact with staff or election candidate is separated to give people more space," said Robyn.
