Competitors from around the world converge on the desert near Algodones
Area hosts Baja Sandboard 2019
NEAR ALGODONES, BC, Mexico (KYMA, KSWT, KECY) - The sand dunes surrounding Algodones saw some fierce action last weekend.
Competitors from around the world converged on the desert for Baja Sandboard 2019. Their goal - to show off their best tricks across a variety of different disciplines.
A Brazilian, William Oliveira, took the gold this weekend.
Sandboarding is a lot like snowboarding, without the snow. Gabriel Cruz, a sandboarder from Oregon, describes it this way:
"When I'm coming off the dune, it's definitely a good rush. You know, you get some good speed. Luckily, the sand's pretty soft so you don't really have to worry about hurting yourself, so you don't have a lot of fear, or at least I don't. Some people are a little more scared than others, I guess. But it's very fluid, it flows really well."
This weekend's competition was the fourth stop on the DRI Sandboard world tour. It moves to Peru on Friday, before ending the season in Chile on December 15.
