City of Calexico prep for Recall Election on Tuesday
CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) -The City of Calexico and the Elections Office are making sure everything is set for the Calexico recall election happening Tuesday.
The Elections Office says it has received about 2,600 ballots so far. That’s a little over 10% of the voting population in Calexico.
"Each ballot there are two questions...shall Raul Ureña be removed or recalled from his position and then the second question is shall Giberto Manzanarez be removed or recalled from his position as a councilmember so either way whichever vote goes 50% plus one that would determine...So if it’s 50% plus one yes then that member will be removed as a council member if it's 50% plus one no then they will remain on the council," said Linsey Dale, Imperial County Elections Office Director.
The Calexico mayor sent out a letter last week to the state of California, the Imperial County Board of Supervisors and the Imperial Irrigation District requesting observers for Tuesday's election saying she wants a clean election.
Mayor Gloria Romo says the state of California has received the letter but she has not heard back.
I went to the Calexico police department to ask the police chief on how they will be preparing for the election.
"This recall has gotten international attention and obviously we want to give it the attention that it deserves and make sure our citizens are safe," said Calexico Police Chief Armando Orozco.
The mayor was able to say a few words.
"I invite to population to vote in this important and special election tomorrow and I hope it is the calm process," Romo said.
Poll sites will open Tuesday at 7:00am and close at 8:00pm.
