Armed robbery suspect formally charged

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - 23-year-old Angel Morales is facing three felony counts including armed robbery and aggravated assault. 

“A little after 11 we had a report of an armed robbery, just happened. Two suspects came up, wanted the wallet and the keys of the guy in the car, 51-year-old victim," stated Sgt. Lori Franklin, Yuma Police Department Public Affairs.

According to the Yuma Police Department (YPD), the suspects then took off with the car.

“About 45 minutes later, officers located the vehicle on Virginia Drive," said Sgt. Franklin.

YPD was able to take Morales into custody.

However, this isn't Morales’ first run-in with the law. 

The 23-year-old has four prior felony convictions including two of drug paraphernalia, one of dangerous drug possession, and another of theft.

Sergeant Lori Franklin said crimes like these are not typical for our area.

“You know, compared to other towns our size I don’t think we have a lot," stated Sgt. Franklin.

She shared why that might be. “So we have a good community, our community likes to help out. They give us information when they have it," explained Sgt. Franklin.

A resident who lives at the apartment complex across from where the robbery happened shared he does not feel as safe. 

“Well not anymore, you know my door is unlocked right now might go lock it right now. Well, I thought it was safe here so if you think it's safe, don’t. You know lock your doors," said Kenneth Finbers, a local who lives nearby.
