Léon Marchand breaks Michael Phelps' world record in 400 meter IM
Michael Phelps has won more gold medals than anyone (23) and is almost universally recognized as the goat in the pool.
On Sunday during the world swimming championships, France and Arizona State swimmer Léon Marchand broke Phelps' 400 meter IM record with a time of 4 minutes and 2.5 seconds.

Marchand has actually been coached at ASU by Phelps' former trainer Bob Bowman. Bowman has been the head coach of the mens and women's program in Tempe since April 2015.
The 21-year-old Marchand has had a pretty illustrious career so far at ASU. Marchand has won five individual NCAA championships and was named Pac-12 Mens Swimmer of the Year in 2022 and 2023.
"I’m just happy I have the longest-standing world record,” Phelps, who was on the call for NBC and Peacock on Sunday, said. “I said to Bob earlier this year, ‘I think this kid has the potential to break four minutes.’”
The world championships will continue on through this Sunday.
