White Sox hold Pope Night to honor one of their most famous fans

CHICAGO (NBC, KYMA) - The Chicago White Sox may have hoped for divine intervention Tuesday night when they honored one of their most famous fans, Pope Leo.

It was "Pope Night" at Guaranteed Rate Field on the city's South Side, and more than 40,000 pope hats were to be distributed to the sell out crowd.

His holiness, Pope Leo XIV, is a native of the Chicago area and a devout fan of the White Sox.

Along with the hats Sister Mary Jo Sobieck threw out the first pitch and the team presented a check to Midwest Augustinian Province, the order where then Father Robert Prevost, now Pope Leo, served while in the Chicago area.

Unfortunately, the White Sox could not bless their fans with a win as the Sox lost to the Cincinnati Reds in ten innings.
