Perspective on Cain
Former AD weighs in on Velasquez saga
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A former Kofa High School athletic director speaks out about Cain Velasquez, days after the former UFC star's arrest.
Earlier on Monday, the Santa Clara County Superior Court denied bail to the former 2-time heavyweight champion.
Velasquez was arrested last week and charged with attempted murder and multiple other gun assault charges.
The Yuma native is accused of trying to shoot 43 year old Harry Goularte, who is charged with molesting a young relative of Velasquez.
Velasquez has a long standing history in the Yuma community, a dominant multi-sport athlete at Kofa High School in football and wrestling.
As a wrestler, he won 2 state titles that led him to wrestle at ASU and eventually catapult him to greater success in the UFC.
Current Aztec High School Principal Steve Pallack was the Athletic Director at Kofa during Velasquez's time at Kofa.
He echoes the sentiment that many of Velasquez's supporters have for the former champion.
"Everybody's disappointed, everybody that knows Cain because they only wish him the best. He's added Yuma on the map to a lot of people. I don't think anybody wants to see something like this happen to him. You understand that , that you lose, you can lose your mind over something like that. I totally understand that."

Pallack went on to add that he hopes that everything in this case will eventually work into Velasquez's favor.
As far as the future of his Kofa Athletics Hall of Fame status is concerned, no word yet on what that will be.
