Derek Chauvin’s attorney provides update on his condition

(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - An attorney for Derek Chauvin said, in a statement on Sunday, that his condition has improved.

The update comes after Chauvin was stabbed 22 times at a federal prison in Arizona on November 24.

The former Minneapolis police officer is serving a 21-year federal sentence for violating George Floyd's civil rights, as well as a concurrent 22.5 year sentence for murder on his conviction in Minnesota State Court.

An incarcerated former gang member and one-time informant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has been charged with attempted murder in connection to the stabbing.

Chauvin's attorney shared an emailed statement noting that his client has been removed from the trauma care facility and returned to prison custody for his follow up care.

The statement added that the Chauvin family are "very concerned" about the facility's capacity to protect him from further harm.
