City of San Luis to continue its vaccination efforts
More vaccines to be available for residents
SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - As cases continue to rise across Yuma County, the city of San Luis is giving locals another opportunity to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
Their efforts will be in partnership with the Yuma County Public Health Services District (YCPHSD) to make more vaccines available locally.
Both San Luis and Yuma residents have received thousands of COVID-19 vaccine doses in 2021, with higher expectations in mind for this year.
Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) data shows over 6,500 residents in the 85336 zip code have received a vaccine. Nearly 11 thousand more residents living in 85349 are vaccinated.
Newly sworn-in Arizona representative, Brian Fernandez, says Regional Center for Border Health (RCBH) is even staying open later to make sure everyone gets a test or shot.
“Yesterday alone, they tested 1,300 people. They had an 18% positive rate which is much higher than they may have experienced in quite some time. But they, they were also able to vaccinate 150 people,” Rep. Fernandez said.
As for positive cases within the last month, both zip codes show some of the lowest case counts in Yuma County.
In 85336, positive reported tests come in at just under 70 over the last month. It's the same story in the larger 85349 zip code.
“This weekend’s 404 positive cases reported by the Yuma County Health Department are a reminder that we must not let our guard down,” said Mayor Gerardo Sanchez.
“Providing the vaccine locally will help combat the spread of COVID-19 and the Omicron variant in our community. We are committed to ensuring the health and wellbeing of our community,” he concluded.
This is something Fernandez agrees with.
“I think the cities are doing everything they can. I think that at this point a lot of it is incumbent on the individuals to take care of themselves. You know, if you're feeling ill, please go get tested,” Fernandez added.
The clinic will be at the San Luis Recreation Gym, located at 965 N. Park Ave., San Luis, AZ 85349 on January 5, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
