Humane Society reaches max capacity

Provides opportunity to "re-home" pet without visiting shelter

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Humane Society of Yuma (HSOY) made it known Wednesday that its facility has reached its max capacity.

"There are too many animals coming in on a daily basis, and our staff and volunteers definitely have their hands full. Our community has already surrendered 122 animals into the shelter so far this month for various reasons," shared Kari Tatar, Director of Development.

It is recommended that if you need to re-home your current pet, please try to do so yourself with friends, family and even social media.  Additionally, HSOY has a page on their website dedicated to owners trying to re-home their pets without coming to the shelter. Information for this program can be found here.

"Many of these reasons indicated by our community are that they have too many animals, are moving or they have no time. Cats giving birth to litters of kittens are also flooding our shelter. We understand people want to make sure the kittens are safe, but the reality is: kittens are better left with their moms in their natural habitat than brought into the shelter," explained Tatar.

As always, the shelter recommends that you ensure your pet is properly identified with a collar and name tag so that if it is captured, the finders are able to help you get your pet back home quickly.  And even if your pet is microchipped, make sure that the information on the microchip is up to date.

If you're interested in helping the shelter with the overwhelming amount of homeless animals they currently have, please visit the HSOY's website, and apply to be a foster parent to a much needed homeless, shelter animal.
