Art in the Park returns to Yuma for MLK Day weekend

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Yuma art lovers went to an exciting weekend at Gateway Park, where Art in the Park, hosted by The Art Center, took place.

Every Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, those with an appreciation for fine art gather at Gateway Park for the annual two-day event.

The yearly two-day event takes place during MILK weekend just outside of downtown.

"We have this event once a year in January. we have some other events scattered around the year as well," said Arts & Cultural Program Manager Ana Padilla.

Art enthusiasts, from all around Yuma, cherish the event with a personal connection, like Robert Isabel.

"We have a friend of ours that's out here. We've supported her for many years, so we're here to support her and other artists," said Isabel.

Local artists showcase their original art and set a standard price or at times auction their work.

Types of art include paintings and murals, decorative wild west cowboy accessories, and of course, pottery and glass-stained works.

"Just to be able to see families come together and have a great time. Artists like being able to show their pieces. Some make sales and they then get to take home their commissions," Padilla spoke.

Each piece has value above and beyond the price tag.

"Beautiful work made by hands and made by the creations of these wonderful human beings," Isabel concluded.

Artists keep all sales entirely while standard admission proceeds go directly to the Yuma Art Center.

The price range was scattered with pieces ranging between $5 to $2,000.
