Settlement reached in lawsuit tied to El Dorado Fire in California

(CNN, KYMA) - Three fireworks companies have agreed to pay more than $4 million to settle a federal lawsuit tied to a 2020 California wildfire.

A blaze sparked when a couple was having a gender reveal party in El Dorado Ranch Park.

The pyrotechnic that generates a cloud of smoke in the color of the baby's gender started a fire that eventually burned nearly 23,000 acres.

A firefighter also died battling the blaze, which burned for more than two months in and around San Bernardino.

Wholesale Fireworks Corp and American Fireworks Warehouse LLC will pay the $4 million for its role in designing, importing, distributing and advertising the smoke bomb. A third company, Pink or Blue Gender Team Inc., will pay $50,000.

Prosecutors said the companies did not safely design and label the smoke bombs, and failed to warn customers of the fire risk.

The deal comes two years after the couple hosting the party pleaded guilty to criminal charges tied to the blaze and fatality.

They were ordered to pay $1.7 million in restitution.
