Federal trial date changed for man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO

(NBC, KYMA) - Luigi Mangione's federal trial in the killing of UntedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has been delayed.

District Judge Margaret Garnett Wednesday pushed back the start of proceedings from September to October, with jury selection set to take place October 5, followed by opening statements on either October 26 or November 2.

Attorneys for Mangione had asked for a postponement because his state murder trial is set to being on June 8.

The 27-year-old is accused of fatally shooting Thompson outside a New York City hotel in December of 2024.

In the federal case, Mangione faces two counts of stalking, and in the state case, he faces nine felony charges, including second-degree murder and various counts related to criminal possession of a weapon.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty in both proceedings.
