Man convicted of trying to assassinate Donald Trump sentenced to life in prison

(NBC, KYMA) - The man found guilty of attempting to assassinate Donald Trump was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday.

Ryan Routh was sentenced to life plus a mandatory additional seven years for a firearm offense.

Prosecutors had been asking for a life sentence for Routh, who was convicted of trying to kill Trump, then a presidential candidate, at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach in September 2024.

Prosecutors wrote in a sentencing memorandum saying Routh remains "totally unrepentant."

Routh represented himself during the trial, but the court-appointed attorney who help him prepare for his sentencing hearing says he will likely appeal.
