Ryan Routh found guilty of attempting to kill President Trump on a Florida golf course

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CNN, KYMA) - The man accused of attempting to kill President Donald Trump last year on a Florida golf course has been convicted.

59-year-old Ryan Routh was found guilty Tuesday on all five federal charges, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate.

During the jury's reading of the verdict, Routh appeared to try and stab himself with a pen in the neck. An eyewitness inside the courtroom said authorities were able to stop him.

Routh represented himself during the trial.

In closing arguments, both prosecutors and the defendant focused in on Routh's intent.

Prosecutors said Routh was stalking trump at the president's golf club, but never fired a shot while Routh claimed an assassination was "never going to happen" and therefore, no intent.

Routh faces the possibility of life in prison. He'll be sentenced on December 18.

President Trump spoke about the verdict, saying he's very grateful for the team who was involved, and said he believes justice was served.

"Well I'm very appreciative of the justice that was given and the way it was handled by Pam Bondi and Todd Blanche and everybody and their team of people. It was really well handled. It's very important, you can't let things like that happen. Nothing to do with me, but a president or even a person, you can't allow that to happen. So justice was served and we'll see what happens, but I very much appreciate the judge and jury and everybody on that. It was so professionally handled. It's a great honor."
