MESRP helps to educate migrant parents

KYMA

CALIPATRIA, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - An elementary school in the Imperial Valley helps migrant parents with a literacy program.

This program helps parents and their children by learning together.

The Migrant Education School Readiness Program (MESRP) is a family literacy program for migrant parents and their children.

Fremont Primary Elementary School in Calipatria offers this class to support children's early childhood development.

And also guides migrant adults with positive parenting skills to assist with their child's oral language.

“It’s a family biliteracy class, especially to prepare young kids, preschoolers, to enter Transitional Kinder to prepare them for school," said Antonia Mendoza, MESRP Instructor. "We invite migrant families with children ages three to five. Even though it’s only for adults, the whole family is invited.”

The Calipatria Unified School District recently approved this program for five additional sessions in 2023.

Parents who would like more information on this program can contact the district office at (760) 348-2892.
