YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY) - Alberta Salcido drives herself the bank on Friday to run errands. She’s independent, has a sense of humor and is full of gratitude.

You’d never guess she just turned 103.

In her many years of life, she said she’s learned many things.

“One of the biggest things is to love and be kind to people,” Salcido said. ”I had a wonderful mom and dad and they were perfect to me.”

Salcido grew up on a farm just outside of Topeka, Kansas. She’s permanently been in Yuma since 2004.

She does many things to stay busy.

“I play bingo at the American Legion Friday nights and Sunday nights,” Salcido said.

She also loves doing puzzles and her daughter calls her a sharp lady.

“You just can’t beat her,” Yvonne Seln, Salcido’s daughter, said. "She’s a wonderful person.”

Seln now lives in Yuma to help her mom, but Salcido said she doesn’t need the assistance. Salcido laughs and said that she helps her daughter.

The independent 103-year-old lives alone in her own place and won’t drive at night, but it’s not because of the darkness.

“I don’t have any boyfriends to look out for,” Salcido said.

She is not only a mother and grandmother, but she’s also a great, great grandmother to a 4 year old girl.

To celebrate her birthday, Salcido and 19 of her friends went to Cocopah Casino.
