Members of Holtville high school volleyball team returns home after traffic collision
The community of Holtville is breathing a sigh of relief after members of the Holtville high school volleyball team were medically cleared to return home.
” Our hearts just kind of sank at that moment. And fortunately, we had a lot of support. A lot of coaches and parents.they were there immediately, ” said Holtville High School Athletic Director, C.J. Johnston.
The team was returning from a tournament in San Diego when their van was struck by an SUV on Highway 111.
Officer Javier Amezcua of the California Highway Patrol said, ” At the time of the collision it was thought that there might have been some broken limbs on scene. And there were some possible internal injuries that might have occurred. ”
First responders arrived on scene and law enforcement closed down the highway.
” Highway 111 was shut down in that area to get mercy air and reach to land their helicopters on scene and have everyone transported. ”
Two members of the volleyball team were airlifted to desert regional hospital and others involved were taken to local hospitals.
Officer Amezcua added, ” Four from the school from the school van and the driver of the Subaru. ”
Although members of the volleyball team received minor injuries Johnston said they’re in high spirits.
” Obviously they’re real sore. And it’s going to take some time to recover. And a little bit worked up. But it could have been a lot worse , ” said Johnston.
California Highway Patrol said that while no alcohol was involved, the collision is still under investigation.
