Convicted sex offender arrested by Border Patrol agents

A convicted sex offender was arrested by Border Patrol after attempting to illegally enter the United States Wednesday night.

At around 6 p.m., agents arrested 31-year-old Wilver Cruz-Avalos after they noticed he attempted to enter the United States. A records check revealed Cruz-Avalos, a Mexican national, was a convicted sex offender.

Cruz-Avalos had been convicted in 2011 in Santa Ana, Calif. for sexual intercourse with a minor under 18. He was then sentenced to 30 days in jail along with three years of felony probation.

“Our agents encounter numerous individuals each and every day, but there is a certain satisfaction when we are able to arrest criminals such as these, which helps keep our community and our country safe,” said El Centro Sector Assistant Chief Patrol Agent David S. Kim.

The 31-year-old Mexican national is the 23rd sex offender arrested by the El Centro Sector in fiscal year 2018. Cruz-Avalos will remain in federal custody pending prosecution.
