DUI checkpoint in Desert Southwest
The El Centro Office of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a sobriety/driver license checkpoint during the Labor Day weekend.
The goal of the CHP is to ensure the safe passage of each and every motorist by targeting roads where there is a high frequency of intoxicated or unlicensed drivers. A sobriety/driver license checkpoint is a proven effective tool for achieving this goal and is designed to augment existing patrol operations. By publicizing our efforts we believe that we can deter motorists from being intoxicated or unlicensed while driving a motor vehicle.
Traffic volume permitting, all vehicles will be checked for drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs or driving unlicensed. Our objective is to send a clear message to those individuals that consider mixing alcohol or drugs and/or driving unlicensed-“The CHP will be keeping a close eye out for you.”
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Note: The sobriety/driver license checkpoint will be in operation from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. The media may contact the El Centro CHP Dispatch Center at 760-482-2500 on September 2, 2017, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. for the exact location of the checkpoint.
As part of the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office ongoing traffic safety campaign,YCSO will be conducting a DUI enforcement detail this Labor Day weekend in effort to detect, stop and arrest alcohol and drug-impaired drivers. Not only will Sheriff’s deputies be increasing patrols throughout Yuma County, but they will also be targeting areas with a high rate of recurrence for DUI-related collisions and/or arrests.
The Sheriff’s Office aggressively enforces the state’s 0.08 percent blood alcohol concentration (BAC) law, Administrative Per Se laws (immediate driver license suspension), 0.04 percent BAC law for commercial vehicle drivers and the 0.01 percent BAC limit for drivers under 21 years of age (‘zero-tolerance’).
Funding for the Sheriff’s Office traffic safety campaign is provided through a grant awarded by the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. These funds enable the Sheriff’s Office to increase the number of deputies on patrol throughout Yuma County during high traffic holiday weekends and thereby significantly reducing the number of DUI-related incidents.
