Inmate stabbed to death at local prison
A prison inmate was stabbed to death by two other inmates during a riot at Calipatria State Prison.
Prison officials say Fred Archuleta, 53, died in the prison’s triage treatment area less than 30 minutes after he was stabbed.
Inmates Emilio Saldana, 27, and Jose Bonilla, 37, who both attacked Archuleta, are being held in the prison’s Administrative Segregation Unit while the incident is being investigated according to prison officials.
The i ncident happened Friday at around 1:45 p.m. in one of the prison’s recreational yards.
Officers say they ordered everyone to get down when the riot broke out. Everyone stopped fighting, except Saldana and Bonilla , who kept attacking Archuleta, until officers fired a 40-millimeter round.
Two inmate-manufactured weapons were found at the scene. No prison guards or other inmates were hurt in the incident.
Archuleta was serving a 65-year prison sentence with the possibility of parole. Saldana is serving a 51-year prison sentence, while Bonilla is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
