Firefighters report busy weekend

The Yuma Fire Department responded to 351 emergency calls between March 5 and March 11, making it the busiest week of this year so far, according to officials.

YFD officials say Saturday was a busy one for fire crews, as they started their shift by responding to a fire at 8 a.m. in the deli section of Albertson’s on 24th Street. The fire was started by a deep fryer and it was extinguished by employees with handheld fire extinguishers.

Later on that morning, the fire department responded to 10 more emergency call between 8:24 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Including 3 rollover crashes on Interstate 8 and a crash on 32nd Street and Araby Road. Fire crews also responded to a house fire where a child had lit an artificial Christmas tree in a box on the home’s porch in the 1300 block of East 26th Street.
