Topic of the Day: Roof, Guilty
13 On Your Side wants to know your thoughts:
June 17, 2015 parish members of the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston gathered for bible study when a young man walked in and sat at the back of the church.
Unbeknownst to them the young man was carrying a gun; in total he killed six women and three men one of which was a South Carolina State Senator. Dylann Roof was later captured and among his possession was a list of other churches.
When interrogated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Roof answered their questions without hast and when asked what happened he jokingly answered “I killed them”. According to Roof he hoped the attack would spark a race war; in letters to family members Roof apologized for his actions, but added that it was something that had to be done.
A jury has found him guilty and will now decide whether Roof spends the rest of his life behind bars or receives the death penalty.
