Police: Delivered-package thefts increase during holidays

Authorities say package thefts increase during the holiday season but the El Centro Police Department says there are ways to try and prevent being a victim.

According to a number of surveys seven out of 10 consumers will shop online this holiday season, putting more people at risk of being victims of package thefts. Authorities say there are some precautions you can take to make sure your packages are placed nowhere else but under your Christmas tree.

“A lot of times especially during the holidays we tend to have our guards down because we are in a rush with things like work and getting this mail delivered to us immediately. Just take the time to monitor what you are buying, monitor your tracking package number and make sure someone will be available to pick it up at that time,” says Officer Adrian Chilpa.

Police say, cases involving homes with camera footage are easier to resolve since authorities can share the images with the community.
