Brown Bag gets check for homeless Christmas dinner

The Calexico Brown Bag Coalition received a check for $3,000 on Tuesday morning from Imperial County Board of Supervisors.

Coalition co-founder Maribel Padilla said the funds will go to provide a Christmas Posada for the city’s homeless.

Last year the coalition fed about one hundred. This year they expect over two hundred special guests, which include the homeless, families fighting cancer, senior citizens, and a low-income family chosen from every school in Calexico.

Padilla said they plan to spend Thanksgiving with the homeless, as well.

“It’s like they have become my family and we have become their family because they don’t have those family members for whatever reason. So, they’ll come to us, they’ll hug us, they’ll give us a kiss. That’s the only way they can thank us. So i try to do something for them at thanksgiving because you usually spend thanksgiving with your family,” Padilla said.

Santa Claus will make a special appearance with gifts for all the guests at the Christmas dinner on Thursday, December 22nd.
