Woman arrested in Calexico with drugs in her car
A woman is behind bars for allegedly having drugs in her car when she tried to enter Calexico from Mexicali at the port of entry.
Calexico Police said 27-year-old, Nereida Ibarra, was driving a car across the Calexico port of entry on Thursday night. U.S. custom agents using a K-9 unit discovered close to 24 kilograms of marijuana in her car. Ibarra was detained and the car was towed and stored for further investigation.
Calexico Police Sergeant Victor Legaspi said the two most common ways of crossing an illegal substance is through body carrying or hidden inside a car. He said the use of K-9 units is vital in discovering drugs in either situation.
“We use our local K-9 officers from the both Border Patrol and U.S. Customs and if they’re not available, we may bring in California Highway Patrol or the Sheriff’s Department,” Legaspi said.
Ibarra is in custody at the Imperial County Jail and will face charges of being in possession of and transporting a controlled substance.
