Senator John McCain visits Yuma’s Territorial State Prison.
YUMA. Ariz- Senator Mc Cain stopped by Yuma Territorial Prison State Park to receive an update on the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area, which he has been involved with since 2000.
On Tuesday morning, officials from around the city gathered at the state park waiting for John McCain to arrive. Over the last fifteen years, Charles Flynn, the Executive Director of Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area, explains how McCain has been apart of the process and how they used funds from Park Service to improve the riverfront.
“Very few federal dollars then created the opportunity to get a tremendous impact, so forty million dollars of improvements along the riverfront was really caused by the heritage area and we leveraged that almost 10 to 1 of the national park service dollars that we get. ” As of right now, four hundred acres of land has been restored, and we are hoping for more in the future. “Yuma was born on the river and I think it’s reconnection to the river, people enjoy it. it’s improve tourism and I think brought a certain pride with the community and it’s connection to the river. We want to complete the West Wetlands and we want to work with the Quisnads with their project so there’s a lot of work to be done.”
