Fiestas Del Sol opens in Mexicali

The Mexicali annual fair Fiestas Del Sol attracts hundreds of thousands of people from both sides of the border.

Imperial Valley resident Julio Torres said he comes mainly for the rich variety of traditional Mexican food and snacks. “Lots of food!” Torres said.

But his main attraction is the handmade Mexican crafts showcased among the fair’s 300 vendors. “Crafts. I want to see what’s out there so I can buy it and take home with me,” Torres said.

Oaxaca vendor Nestor M. Ojeda said his wood-carved “Alebrijes” are a family tradition. “This work is traditional because it’s handed down generation to generation. In my case I am third generation making this type of work,” Ojeda said.

Jalisco vendor Carmen Marin Locano said her crafts are important because they represent her culture. “We make las catrinas. It’s a mexican craft. It’s made with cardboard,” Locano said.

Imperial Valley resident Gildardo Rodriguez said his kids are the reason he’s there. “Things that are available like food and crafts. Some of my kids are with me so they probably are interested in rides and stuff like that,” Rodriguez said.

Fiestas Del Sol also features musical attractions and kids’ rodeo shows. It opens every day from five pm to 1 am.
