Local reacts to SCOTUS ruling on affirmative action in college admissions

Supreme Court struck down affirmative action in college admissions Thursday

YUMA COUNTY, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Supreme Court ruling came down Thursday and sent shockwaves through the academic world.

Locally, one first-generation college grad with roots in the Gadsden School District was disheartened by the ruling.

Vanessa Aguiar, a recent grad from Arizona State University feels the ruling turns the clock back on progress made for minority students seeking academic opportunities.

Aguiar said it will now be another obstacle students like her have to overcome.

“It’s something that already doesn’t necessarily work in our favor. So we’re always having to push against it and to have this added barrier it feels like, it almost feels like a slap in the face," expressed Vanessa Aguiar.

Aguiar graduated this past spring with four majors to her name, including global studies and political science.
