Federal court to hear arguments on DACA Wednesday
(KYMA, KECY/ CNN) - Ten years ago, former President Barack Obama created the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program-- better known as DACA - to protect immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children from deportation.
According to immigration officials, there are now more than 611,000 so-called "Dreamers" in the U.S., many of whom are now adults.
But now-- the program is in jeopardy.
Arguments regarding the legality of the DACA program will be heard Wednesday in a New Orleans Federal Appeals Court.
A lawsuit brought forth by Texas and other states claims it placed a burden on the states and was an executive overreach.
Last July, a Texas judge ruled that DACA was unlawful and blocked the government from approving new applications.
He allowed the program to continue for current enrollees while the case is litigated.
As of now its not known if the case could eventually go to the U.S. Supreme Court.
