New bill will protect 2nd Amendment, reduce violence, says Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema
The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act has the support needed from Republicans to pass the Senate
YUMA, Ariz. (KECY, KYMA) - Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema from spoke on the Senate floor today about the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the Senate’s response to the tragic school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.
The bill has support from over 10 Republican senators, more than the amount needed to pass it through the senate.
The Act includes funding for mental health services, school safety measures, and stricter laws for Americans to own guns.
It would also create incentives for states to include juvenile records in the national instant criminal background check system.
Senator Sinema says these provisions will help reduce violence, without infringing on the rights of law-abiding gun owners.
"Protecting the constitutional rights of law-abiding Americans while reducing familial violence and the occurrences of childhood trauma," Sinema said. "All of these tools together will give families in Arizona and across our country more peace of mind, so they can trust that their communities are secure and their schools are safe.”
The bill does not ban assault rifle weapons, like the guns used in the Uvalde, and Buffalo mass shootings.
The act will still need to be voted on two more times before it can be sent to President Biden.
