“I don’t like seeing kids with bruises,” says Aleena Buchanan
Student Council President for Southwest High School, Buchanan says she will report anything that resembles abuse
SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - April is Child Abuse Awareness Month and across the Desert Southwest victim, advocates, and law enforcement are working together to get the message out. Their message, if you suspect it, report it.
On Thursday morning students and faculty from Southwest Junior High were joined by members of the SLPD and Amberly's Place. They were tasked with placing blue pinwheels on the school's front lawn.
Blue is the color designated for Child Abuse Awareness and the pinwheel has long since been the symbol of child abuse. Trevor Umphress with Amberly's Place spoke to the crowd about the need to report anything suspicious.
Umphress spoke about safety over trust, telling students that although their friends may be upset, they'll still be alive.
Student Council President Aleena Buchanan said that she didn't like to see kids with bruises and she would report any suspicious if it meant saving someone's life.
Hilda Flores, Secretary for SWJH Student Council says that it's imperative that you report abuse because without speaking out the abuse can get worse and maybe even affect others.
